Check the Status of Your Refund
The IRS should issue your refund check within six to eight weeks of filing a paper return. If you file electronically, you can check the status within 24–48 hours of acceptance. Direct deposit refunds typically arrive within one week for e-filed returns.
- E-filed returns: refund status available within 24 hours of IRS acceptance
- Paper returns: refund status available within 4 weeks of mailing
- Direct deposit: typically received within 1 week of approval
- Paper check: typically received within 3–4 weeks after approval
- IRS updates refund status once daily, usually overnight
